Prayer to St. Maria Bertilla Boscardin

Dear St. Maria, you were born in 1888 to an Italian peasant family. Your father was an alcoholic and subject to vicious outbursts and physical violence. You did not receive much schooling as you were made to work in the home and in the fields. The people of the village, including your own parish priest, made fun of you for your perceived slowness. In 1904 you joined the Sisters of St. Dorothy and were put to work as a laundress. Later, you were assigned to an infirmary with very sick children and showed a great aptitude in serving them. All through World War I you nursed them devotedly, even in the midst of great danger. Many of these children were present to testify at your canonization hearing.

St. Maria, though you internalized what others said to you and repeated that you were just a ‘goose’, you were wise in the things that matter most in life- following God’s will and serving others with love. Pray that we too may wish to become saints and ask that God may give us the graces to help us in this vow. Help us to devote ourselves to a God as completely as you did. Pray that we may persevere in the spiritual life and earn an everlasting crown which never tarnishes. Amen.

St. Maria Bertilla Boscardin, pray for us!
