St. Simeon

Holy Simeon lived in the first century. In Luke's Gospel, chapter two, Joseph and Mary bring Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. That is where they meet Simeon. The holy man had waited patiently for the Lord to grant him a request: he wanted to live to see the Messiah, the Savior of the world. But he did not know who that person would be, or when and if his prayer would be fulfilled.

The young couple from Nazareth approached him with their baby. He looked into the eyes of the Child and felt a burst of joy in his heart. His eyes glowed. He lifted Jesus into his arms, then held him up and prayed:

"Now, my God, I can die in peace. I have seen with my own eyes the world's salvation. You have prepared this for all your people."

Mary and Joseph looked at one another. They were silently amazed. Then the old man turned to Mary. His eyes became sad as he said softly, "Your own soul will be pierced by the sword." Mary did not understand what this meant, and she prayed to God for courage.

Holy Simeon had received his request from God. He remained in joyful thanksgiving as the couple and their baby left.

Reflection: When Simeon held Jesus in his arms, he knew him to be the Messiah. What would happen if I were to recognize the presence of Jesus in my own life more often?

St. Thais

Egyptian penitent According to legend, Thais was a wealthy woman raised in Alexandria, Egypt, as a Christian. She decided to become a courtesan. Repenting of her lifestyle through the influence of St. Paphnutius, she gave up her money and entered a convent where she was walled up for three years to perform extreme penance for her dissolute habits. Finally, at the urging of St. Anthony, she was released from her spiritual incarceration and permitted to join the other women of the convent, dying a mere fifteen days after her release.

St. Pelagia

Pelagia, more often called Margaret, on account of the magnificence of the pearls for which she had so often sold herself, was an actress of Antioch, equally celebrated for her beauty, her wealth and the disorder ofher life.  During a synod at Antioch, she passed Bishop St. Nonnus of Edessa, who was struck with her beauty; the next day she went to hear him preach and was so moved by his sermon that she asked him to baptize her which he did. She gave her wealth to Nonnus to aid the poor and left Antioch dressed in men's clothing. She became a hermitess in a cave on Mount of Olivette in Jerusalem, where she lived in great austerity, performing penances and known as "the beardless monk" until her sex was discovered at her death. Though a young girl of fifteen did exist and suffer martyrdom at Antioch in the fourth century, the story heretold is a pious fiction, which gave rise to a whole set of similar stories under different names. Her feast day is October 8th.

Text Box: Reading 1 	            IS 5:1-7

Let me now sing of my friend, my friend's song concerning his vineyard. My friend had a vineyard
on a fertile hillside; he spaded it, cleared it of stones, and planted the choicest vines;
within it he built a watchtower, and hewed out a wine press. Then he looked for the crop of grapes,
but what it yielded was wild grapes. Now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard: What more was there to do for my vineyard that I had not done? 
Why, when I looked for the crop of grapes,
did it bring forth wild grapes?
Now, I will let you know what I mean to do with my vineyard: take away its hedge, give it to grazing,
break through its wall, let it be trampled!
Yes, I will make it a ruin: it shall not be pruned or hoed, but overgrown with thorns and briers;
I will command the clouds not to send rain upon it.
The vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his cherished plant; he looked for judgment, but see, bloodshed!
for justice, but hark, the outcry!

A vine from Egypt you transplanted;
you drove away the nations and planted it.

Reading 2 	            PHIL 4:6-9

Brothers and sisters:
Have no anxiety at all, but in everything,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
make your requests known to God.
Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding
will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters,
whatever is true, whatever is honorable,
whatever is just, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious,
if there is any excellence
and if there is anything worthy of praise,
think about these things.
Keep on doing what you have learned and received
and heard and seen in me.
Then the God of peace will be with you.

Gospel			  MT 21:33-43

Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people: "Hear another parable.
There was a landowner who planted a vineyard,
put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower.  Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. When vintage time drew near,
he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.  But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned.  Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way.  Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, 'They will respect my son.'
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.'
They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?"
They answered him, "He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times." 
Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
and it is wonderful in our eyes?
Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit."

 Prayer  for All Souls

"Why...did it bring forth wild grapes?" —Isaiah 5:4
 
God took perfect care of His vineyard, the house of Israel (Is 5:1ff). With a perfect Gardener and perfect care, you would expect the vineyard to produce domesticated, fruitful grapes. No one would logically expect wild grapes to be produced. For this to happen, the domesticated grapevines that were planted and cultivated would seemingly need to have new DNA, that of wild grapes, and that is what resulted.

Therefore, God told the people of Israel, and us also, that if they want to change their nature to be wild, He would let them live in a condition which fits their desire for wildness. Thus, the Lord tore down the walls which protected the vineyard, allowing wild conditions, wild plants, and wild animals to invade (Is 5:5-6). Perhaps then the Israelites, and us as well, would come to their senses (see Lk 15:17ff) and return to the Lord. Perhaps the wild grapes would learn from the merciless effects of wild living and humbly return to their domesticated, fruitful nature that comes with being a child of God.

When Jesus proclaimed the parable of the vineyard in today's Gospel reading, those who heard understood Jesus' message all too clearly. It was not that they couldn't understand Jesus; it was that most of those who heard Him rejected His message, rejected God and His protection, and chose wildness and separation from Him.

The message is clear. God's plan is to bring us into His family so we'll bear good fruit. Repent of any desire to "run wild" and rebel against the Lord (Ex 32:25).
 
Prayer: Father, do in me whatever it takes in order to do through me whatever You will.
Promise: "Then God's own peace, which is beyond all understanding, will stand guard over your hearts and minds." —Phil 4:7
Praise: Praise You, Jesus, "my Lord and my God!" (Jn 20:28)

Prayer of St. Gertrude the great dictated by Our Lady to release 1,000 Souls from Purgatory each time it is said. The prayer was extend to include living sinners which would alleviate the indebtedness accrued to them during their lives.

“Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the Universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.”

St. Gertrude the Great was born in Germany in 1263. She was a Benedictine Nun, and meditated on the Passion of Christ, which many times brought floods of tears to her eyes. She did many penances, and Our Lady appeared to her many times. Her holy Soul passed away in 1334. November 16 is her Feast Day.
